Om Diva! From the love for shopping and travelling, a new concept store

Few weeks ago, when I went to Dublin, I discovered a lovely shop close to the George’s street Arcade, called OM DIVA. The shop has three floors: downstairs there is the Vintage Collection. On the main floor there is a Om Diva Colllection, and upstairs there are collections of independent designer. Ruth, the owner of the shop is a sparkling and very kind woman. She welcomed me with open arms, and she also told me all about her story and daily work. I have decided to share with you her story, with this short interview, and I will also show you three looks that we had choosen out for you 🙂

1.Untoccodiglamour:-“Would you like to tell me anything more about the concept of the store? How was the idea born?” Om Diva:-“The idea was born from the love for fashion and travelling. All started when I was 20ies. In that period I did a lot of travel (Australia, Europe…) and I used to buy clothes that I sold back in other countries. When I went in Vietnam, India, I did some clothes following my personal style, helped by some local tailor’s shop. So when I came home at 28s and I got a real job, it was with United airlines, and then with this real job I realize I was able to fly very cheaply because I can used my travel benefits so I thought I really missed buying and selling so when I had some time away from my job I would flight to india and make more collections then I would sell in week end markets.  The week end markets were really successful, so I opended a little shop. It hosted two collections (Om diva e Vintage). Business was going so well, but then the recession arrived, so to optimize costs I found out this five floor building: three of them for the trade, the other two are to rent to independent designer. So they can have here their own space to create their collections. Independent designers can create and sell at the same time. A kind of Atelier where they become a little indipendent worker.  Now, having two children, I do not design the collections but I’m just buying small independent labels and then there is the vintage. So even though everything is really different it all fits together like in a very  “good sandwich”.

2.Untoccodiglamour:-“What is your typical customer and which kind of dress or accessory is looking for?” Om Diva:-“My customers are so uneven. From 17-18 to 29-30th. But I have also fifty-yeras-old customers. They are focused on Vintage, so in that way they recollects their fashion time, releaving a past time. I have a big variety of customers, because my shop has more than one style. I have also a big number of bijoux, because they have an accesible price, so people who came here to do shopping, often reinvent their outfit with bijoux”.

3.Untoccodiglamour:-“First floor is dedicated to indipendent designer. Do you directly contact them, inspired by your personal taste or do the designer ask you to show their collection in your shop?” Om Diva:-“At the beginning I got through to 15 designers. Later designers looked for me. Usually they stay in my atelier for two collections. My shop acts as a springboard also because a lot of journalists, photographers, stylist gravitate here around. They are attracted because here they can find a masses of collections and designers that can’t find anywhere else. So this is a big opportunity for young independent designers to do commercial experience and to distinguish themselves”.

Un paio di settimane fa sono stata a Dublino e nei miei giri per negozi ne ho scoperto uno fantastico, vicino al  George’s street Arcade, OM DIVA. Il negozio si sviluppa su tre piani: al sotterraneo c’è la collezione Vintage. Al piano principale la collezione Om Diva e al piano di sopra le collezioni degli stilisti indipendenti. Ruth, la proprietaria del negozio è una donna frizzante ed estremamente disponibile che mi ha subito accolto a bracccia aperte per raccontarmi la sua storia e tutto ciò che c’è dietro al suo lavoro quotidiano. Con questa piccola intervista ho deciso di condividerlo con voi, e poi vi mostrerò anche tre look che abbiamo scelto assieme per voi lettori 🙂

1.Untoccodiglamour:-“Vorresti raccontarmi qualcosa di più in merito al concept di questo negozio? com’è nata l’idea e che tipo di lavoro fate qui?” Om Diva:-“L’idea è nata dal mio amore per il fashion e per i viaggi. Tutto è cominciato quando avevo 20 anni, in quel periodo viaggiavo molto (Australia, Europa…) e mi piaceva acquistare capi che poi rivendevo altrove. Quando mi recavo in Vietnam, in India, con il supporto di piccole sartorie locali, creavo degli abiti in base al mio gusto personale che poi rivendevo in altri paesi. A 28 anni ho avuto il mio primo vero lavoro, per la United Airlines, cosi nel mio tempo libero, utilizzavo i miei travel benefits per viaggiare e capii che davvero mi mancava comprare e rivendere, cosi appena potevo viaggiavo in India per realizzare delle collezioni che poi rivendevo nei week end markets. Tutte queste attività iniziavano a dare buoni frutti, così successivamente ho aperto un piccolo negozio che ospitava fondamentalmente due collezioni (Om diva e Vintage). Gli affari andavano a gonfie vele, ma a un certo punto è arrivata la recessione, così in un’ottica di ottimizzazione dei costi ho trovato questo edificio di 5 piani: tre li ho adibiti alla vendita, mentre gli ultimi due li affitto agli stilisti indipendenti che qui possono avere uno spazio tutto loro per creare le proprie collezioni. Nello stesso palazzo gli stilisti possono creare e poi vendere. Una sorta di Atelier in cui diventano tutti dei piccoli lavoratori indipendenti. Ora avendo due bambine non disegno più la mia collezione ma compro alcune etichette indipendenti e poi c’è il vintage. Sebbene in un unico contesto, ci siano molte cose differenti, tutto si incastra alla perfezione come in… “a good sandwich”.

2.Untoccodiglamour:-“Qual’è la tua cliente tipo e che genere di vestiti/accessori si aspetta di trovare nel tuo negozio?” Om Diva:-“La mia tipologia di cliente è molto varia. Si parte dai 17-18 anni fino ai 29-30. Ma ho anche affezionate clienti 50enni che si concentrano fondamentalmente sul Vintage perchè rivivono la moda dei loro anni, ricatturando così un tempo passato. In realtà ho una grande varietà di clienti perchè nel mio negozio non mi focalizzo su un unico stile, ma su più stili. Ospito inoltre una buona quantità di bijoux, perchè i gioielli hanno un prezzo accessibile, così chi viene a fare acquisti da Om Diva, spesso decide di rinnovare il proprio outfit con un gioiello”.

3.Untoccodiglamour:-“Il primo piano è dedicato agli stilisti indipendenti. Sei tu a contattarli direttamente ispirandoti per la scelta al tuo gusto personale o sono gli stilisti che interpellano te per poter esporre nel tuo negozio?” Om Diva:-“Inizialmente ero entrata in contatto con 15 stilisti che avevo scelto personalmente. Successivamente sono loro che hanno cercato me. In media gli stilisti che si fermano nel mio Atelier sviluppano due collezioni. Il mio negozio è una sorta di trampolino di lancio, anche perchè qui attorno gravitano molti giornalisti, fotografi, stylist e addetti ai lavori, attratti dal fatto che una così alta concentrazione di collezioni e silisti è difficile da trovare altrove. Questa diventa quindi un’ottima occasione per i giovani stilisti indipendenti per fare un’esperienza commerciale e avere la possibilità di farsi conoscere”.
